What is a Boonslick?
Boone's Lick is a Missouri historical site very near the Missouri River in Central Missouri close to where we used to reside. Two salt springs, or licks, were used at the site by Daniel Boone's sons, Daniel and Nathan and two partners 1806-14 to produce salt. The salt was made by heating brine, which today still bubbles from the earth as a spring, in large iron pots over furnaces which evaporated the water and left the salt. 300 gallons of brine would yield 60 pounds of salt. The licks turned out 500 pounds of salt a day and required four furnaces and up to twenty workers. The salt was traded and sold and is still especially important in preserving meats.
